ABSTRACT
A vapor compression cycle refrigeration machine integrated with water heater has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Here, the objective of the water heater installation is to improve the energy efficiency in comparison with the ordinary vapor compression cycle. Increasing the energy efficiency is one of the solutions to help Indonesian Government in reducing of using fossil energy resources. Usually, waste heat from the condenser is released to atmosphere. This waste heat is used as a heat resource for the water heater. In this work computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to simulate the heating process in the water heater. In the simulation, temperature of the heating coils is assumed to be constant at averaged measurements. The initial temperature of the water is 300C and temperature of the heating coil is 500C. The length of the simulation is 180 minutes. Temperature contour and velocity vector at 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 150 minutes, and 180 minutes, are plotted respectively. The simulation and measurement results are compared. The main conclusion here is that CFD can be used to simulate the heating process and the simulation and measurement results show a good agreement.
